BMW i8

Ever since its arrival back in 1988, the Suzuki Vitara series has earned acclaim for its compact, city-oriented dimensions and genuine off-road capability. The series has evolved through changes in body size and powertrain and now, more than 25 years after the original model’s debut, the all-new Vitara is set to hit the showrooms across Europe. Suzuki says the new Vitara has smaller dimensions to meet modern needs and incorporates the brand’s ALLGRIP four-wheel-drive system as an option. Standard equipment on all models include seven airbags, 16-inch alloy wheels, audio system with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control with speed limiter, auto air conditioning, front and rear electric windows and projector headlamps. More expensive versions add 17-inch silver painted alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, smartphone link audio and navigation system. The top-spec model, meanwhile, ends up with LED projector headlights, 17-inch polished alloy wheels, key less entry with start b...

Acura ILX Review

Image
The 2015 Acura ILX ranks 16 out of 16 Upscale Small Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Acura ILX, as well as reliability and safety data. While the 2015 Acura ILX is priced lower than many competitors, reviewers are let down by its uninspiring performance. The Acura ILX has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that some auto critics say has enough power for city driving. However, a few say that the ILX could use more power for highway passing. A few reviewers say the standard five-speed automatic transmission is outdated, and that the ILX would have better acceleration if it had a transmission with more gears. The ILX also offers a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that test drivers think provides significantly more power, however it is only paired with a six-speed manual transmission, which some critics say may be a detriment for some drivers. According to the EPA, the 2015 ILX gets up to 24/35 mpg city/highway, which is good for t...

15 Best Family Cars of 2015

Image
Determining the best family car depends largely on what kind of family you have. For example, if you and yours are the outdoorsy types, an SUV may be the best way to go. Urbanites might benefit from a minivan or sedan. Those in between, well, that's what crossover SUVs are for. The good news is that the days when station wagons were the only choice for families are long gone. The market has responded to these different circumstances with a plethora of shapes and styles to suit virtually any need. Of course, determining the best of these choices is what we do, so we gathered together 23 of the latest and greatest different vehicles from a variety of manufacturers to determine which made the cut. We started with last year's finalists, and culled those that were either due for imminent replacement, or which had been clearly surpassed by newer vehicles in the segment. To that, we added new vehicles that had come out since last year -- including a couple of redesigns -- voted...

Mercedes-AMG C63 saloon (2015) review

Image
This is the new 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63, the second generation of the most popular AMG model in history – 5000 examples of the last model were sold in the UK from 2009. The spec will send shockwaves through BMW M Division. The big news is the gorgeous 6.2-litre naturally aspirated engine has gone, replaced by a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 – the BMW M3/M4 has a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six. Performance, torque and fuel efficiency all improve. Both saloon and estate models are available. The C63 saloon goes on sale from April 2015 priced at £59,795, the estate from July 2015 priced at £60,995. Tell me about that engine in the new 2015 C63 Codenamed M1777, the 4.0-litre V8 is hand-built at Affalterbach, and is smaller, lighter, more powerful and more efficient than the engine it replaces. Featuring an iron block with aluminium heads, the V8 is effectively a pair of 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines from the A45 AMG on a common crank. The turbochargers are packaged in the vee, h...

Aston Martin Vanquish (2015) review

Image
How refreshing... Despite protestations as to the startling dynamic benefits wrought by nigh-on undetectable engineering upgrades, model-year facelifts are, almost without exception, precisely that these days; a nose job with attendant bruising. Here on the 2015 Aston Martin Vanquish, however, we find exactly the opposite. A brace of new exterior colours, new ten-spoke alloys offering a 7kg weight saving and new leather trim colours including the deeply suspicious Fandango Pink aside, everything that differentiates the 2015 Vanquish from its predecessor is dedicated to upping the driving entertainment quota and the commensurate size of the passenger-seat wet patch. What's new on the 2015 Aston Martin Vanquish? Most significant is the first incorporation of ZF’s 8HP automatic transmission into a transaxle layout. Three percent lighter than its predecessor, the new eight-speed Touchtronic III gearbox adds two further ratios to the equation and boasts 130-millisecond shift speed...

Mazda CX-5

Image
What is it? Family car buyers, despite the appearance of Mazda’s smart CX-5, read on: it is a car that should be on your shortlist. It’s no Evoque, despite the new ‘Kodo’ design language, but it’s inoffensive enough and actually underplays the Mazda compact SUV. Beneath the surface, there’s a lot more interesting stuff going on. Nothing here has been carried over from other Mazdas: the chassis is new, the engines are new, even the way it’s built is new. Is it enough to make Mazda a real player in this sector? Well, actually, yes. It is. Driving The CX-5 is a very mature model to drive. Only the Ford Kuga matches it in the mainstream sector: otherwise, it has the taut dynamics and impressive agility to match the German brands. It even steers nicely, yet also has an easy-going, relaxed feel. The two engines are ‘Skyactiv’ units: one remarkably high-compression petrol, or a remarkably low-compression 2.2-litre diesel with two power outputs. 85 per cent sold in the UK will be...

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Image
What is it? Short of a tractor, nothing will tackle mud as well as this. But you pay for it on-road. Still, no modern Mercedes is built quite like this, and that AMG version is just mad. Driving The steering needs a lot of lock before the G starts to tack, at which point it weights up considerably, and soon after the nose gets rather vague as the front tyres yield to physics - often before the stability control has got a sniff of what's going on. But even so, it does speed and grip in a way that lets it keep pace with modern stuff without too much effort.  Around town, the G feels firm, but beyond city limits, it's properly hard. You can see why this is - Merc has sought to improve body control by fitting stronger springs to limit roll and improve cornering ability. They work alright, but the trade-off is that the G hops and skips where say, a Range Rover wouldn't. The auto gearbox may have seven speeds, but it's slower to choose between them, plus the engi...

Volkswagen Golf GTI

Image
What is it? You need to ask? This is the definitive hot hatch, the template, the absolute guv’nor. Having mislaid its mojo down the back of the sofa for much of the ’90s, the Golf GTI has been on a roll since 2005’s fantastic MkV iteration, and reaches new levels of sophistication a decade later in this MkVII form. ‘The Golf GTI is a car that everyone, regardless of their ability, should be able to drive to maybe 90 per cent of its maximum within a few minutes,’ VW’s chassis boss says. It’s as crisply styled as ever, if less distinctive looking than before (despite the fact its red grille frame line now extends into the headlights), but the ‘want one’ factor remains sky high. Driving The GTI is powered by a 2.0-litre, 217bhp turbocharged four-pot, which is good for 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds, and a top speed of 152mph. What more do you really need? We’d take the six-speed manual ’box over the rather numb dual-clutch auto, and the GTI’s fully independent rear suspension and phe...

BMW 4 Series Coupe

Image
What is it? The number 4 is a new one for BMW. But don’t be deceived, because really this is the new 3-Series Coupe. The ‘coupe’ bit may have been dropped – to help give it a personality all of its own – but the 4 is wider and has a lower centre of gravity than the car it replaces. So it’s actually more koop-ish than ever, and up to 45kg lighter. Although it’s based on the 3-Series saloon (with a couple of doors removed, of course), it’s been fiddled with so it behaves in a more sporty manner than the four-door 3. Though it was never in danger of becoming too edgy – save that for the upcoming M4 version… Driving We’ve already touched on the clues: less weight, wider track, lower centre of gravity. All of which are good news when faced with an empty road. The 4 relishes them. The steering has been sharpened versus the 3-Series saloon, to which you can add a variable system with adaptive ride. We’d recommend doing so. Then pop it into Sport mode, where it feels instantly att...

Porsche 911 Turbo

Image
The Turbo S is a more complete, rounded proposition than a Nissan GT-R: perhaps the ultimate everyday supercar. Your eyes may disagree. What is it? Massively fast, massively competent and massively makes you look like someone who was just a bit too scared to buy a GT3. The answer? Buy a GT3. Driving No, the turbo six doesn't scream like a Ferrari V8, but has a unique soundtrack all of its own: a bassy, phasing hum at idle, like something from a Seventies sci-fi series, morphing into a barrage of cannon-fire exhaust as you thump up through the gears. Such is the flat-six's flexibility that on any A- or B-road you never need change out of third, a wrecking ball of a gear that carries you from walking pace into triple figures incurring only minor blindness along the way. Not that changing gear is a chore: now Porsche has ditched the daft push-me-pull-you buttons from its double-clutch gearbox - replacing them with conventional right-for-up-left-for-down paddles - this 7sp...
